* Oktoberfest: 18th Sept - 3rd Oct 2004 *
|
Germany is large and diverse - but if you could only see
one part, and if in this part you could roll all its facets
into one, that part should be Munich.
As the capital of Bavaria, it's everything you'd expect of
a typical, and stereotypical, German city. It's true that
they eat sausage, and there's absolutely no doubt they drink
beer - but, with the city's fascinating history and spectacular
location, you'll also find grand palaces and fairytale castles
set in stunning countryside.
And it's that time of year again - the time when some 6 million
visitors descend on Munich and a staggering 61,000 hectolitres
of beer are consumed. Oktoberfest
was first held in 1810 to celebrate a royal wedding, but it
was the beer drinking more than the traditional ceremonies
that caught on and survived to present-day Munich. The party
has in fact grown so much that it now features 14 beer tents
and 600 performers playing music, dancing and singing in traditional
costume.

"The teacher was excellent and I got a lot out of my
course in Munich. The school was very businesslike in its
operations." David Livingstone

Pizzafest, Naples: 9th-19th
Sept
Pizza lovers look no further! This event is probably the largest
celebration of pizza anywhere in the world - which is only fitting,
given its humble origins in early 19th-century Naples. For 2 weeks
in September the centre of Naples is filled with the irresistible
smell of fresh pizza, and visitors have plenty of opportunity (that
is, even more than usual) to gorge themselves. More

Italian Course (20 lessons) in Naples = £139
"My experience in Napoli was marvellous!
The school is wonderful, the classes engaging and the people great.
There are well thought-out activities planned for each weekday afternoon,
which is a good way to get to know fellow students, the city and
culture, and more Italian. Thanks
for your help, which really paved the way for me." Katharine

Catalan Wine & Cava Festival,

Maremàgnum, in Barcelona's Port Vell, is the location of
this sparkling show celebrating one of Spain's most famous exports,
cava. Timed to coincide with the grape harvest, this is THE place
to be exhibiting if you're one of the area's 400 wine houses or
merchants...and the place to be thirsty if you want to savour the
generous flows of cava or some superb Alt Penedés rosés.

Maureen Rohmer: 2 Week Super Tuscan Course (cooking, wine tasting,
cultural sessions & social activities) in Siena, July 04
"I'm a French teacher and have studied French and Spanish
at university level. The friend with whom I went, Mary Roberts,
chose Cactus having read the brochure. Siena is a jewel - I can
enthusiastically recommend it! I was very pleased with the language
classes and the cooking classes. The teachers were wonderful. I
was housed in a very large apartment outside of town, and the husband
and wife were very gracious. Because the apartment was outside of
town, this made returning from the cooking lessons late at night
a little more of an effort. Perhaps cooking students in the future
could be housed closer.
The trip was wonderful! My little suggestion does not in the least
detract from my enthusiasm for these 2 weeks in Tuscany, and I would
recommend Cactus to my friends."
Mary Roberts (who travelled with Maureen)
"I just returned from my Italian trip, and wanted to let you
know what a wonderful time I had in Siena. The classes were excellent,
and the family with whom I stayed was wonderful. Siena is such a
beautiful spot! My Italian has improved, and I thoroughly enjoyed
the entire two weeks. I then went on to Florence 'to practice my
Italian'. All went well. Ciao, Mary."

Eeva Powell: 1 week General Course
in Florence, June 04
"There was a nice article about Cactus Language in one
of the Sunday papers (either Sunday Times or Sunday Telegraph)
which made me ask for your brochure. At that time I didn't
have an opportunity to take a course but I kept the brochures
and later looked at your website. When I was in a position
to attend a language course I thought I would like to go to
Florence because of the art and historical interest and also
there was a one week course available when I wanted. I had
researched other schools on the web.
I think the school was well run and the lessons were varied
and well organised. The general organisation of the school
was caring and one felt that they looked after you. The location
from my point of view was excellent, as it was near all the
main interests, and I stayed in a flat which I thought was
excellent.
I liked that there were varied activities for the students,
if they wanted to participate. The lessons were just right
for me, at the level that I was in, and the lessons were well
thought out. And of course I loved Florence (Firenze!) - lots
of things to do and see in your free time, and all walking
distance from the school and from my accommodation.
My flight was two hours late leaving Milan, as the original
plane had something wrong with it, so we had to wait for a
replacement. But that was nothing to do with the school! I
managed to phone the company which was meant to meet me, so
they were waiting for me when I finally arrived at nearly
midnight on Sunday!"
