* Montreal International Jazz
Festival: 30th June - 11th July *
| You only have to
walk into the nearest store and be asked "Can
I help you
est-ce que je peux vous aider?" to
realise just how bilingual, and bicultural, Montreal is. Situated
in Canada's eastern province of Quebec, this is the largest
French-speaking city outside Paris and there's no doubt it's
stolen a certain joie de vivre from across the water.
Despite being locked in an English-French duel for some 3
centuries, it today exudes a friendly, almost romantic ambiance
where the interaction of cultures only adds to its charm.
Come at the end of June and you'll be treated to one of the
world's most famous and seductive music festivals - the 25th
Montreal International Jazz Festival. As well as
ticketed events there are also many free performances.

Formula One fans will also know that June 13th is the day
of the Canadian Grand Prix,
held at Montreal's fast Gilles Villeneuve circuit. Listen
to the roar of engines and smell the rubber burning between
11th-13th June.

"The holiday was amazing! I thoroughly enjoyed my time
in Montreal and the surronding areas. During the fortnight I
managed to visit lots of the city, enjoy a few nights at the
Jazz Festival (which was incredible), a few days at the Arts
Festival (very inspiring), go to Quebec city (which was beautiful)
and, to top it all, my French has improved enormously.
The host family were lovely, very helpful and welcoming. The
first weekend Andrée, my hostess, came with me to Quebec
city and showed me all the sites and the countryside. I put
on a stone in weight with the superb food that was dished up
each evening ,and at the end of the two weeks I was sad to leave.
Montreal is very beautiful and has an incredible vivacity that
is infectious. The people are lovely, very kind and amazingly
friendly (both Francophones and Anglophones). I will return
next year (expenses willing) but will probably take my three
children as I am sure they will benefit from the culture and
the language experience. Thank you very much for helping me
organise the trip - I really had a great time and have come
home to reality with a bump."

Marien Levy: General French Course in Aix en Provence, April 04
"I know that I promised I would not bother you with any more
questions, but...I've loved my course here in Aix en Provence and
feel that my French has really progressed.
I'm not flying back to the US until 21st June and so have enough
time to study for another two weeks somewhere, and still do all
the visiting and travelling I'd hoped to do. Do you think it would
be possible to book a 2 week stay in Toulouse, Brest or Bordeaux?
A general course with a host family stay is fine...I would be paying
for all of this through your website, rather than the fuss of transferring
money from a third source, so things on my end could proceed quickly.
Thanks so much - and thanks again for your help in connecting me
with the school in Aix, I've had a wonderful stay! Marien Levy"

| Jenny Conaty &
Ashleigh Cook: A Level French Course in Bordeaux, April 04
"We had a BRILLIANT time in our week in Bordeaux! Annick,
who was our host family for the week was an amazing woman,
and she was really keen to help us. She spoke very clearly
and was quite flexible with the times we were in and out,
and she always gave us enough to eat! Bordeaux was an amazing
place and the school had a really nice atmosphere. The course
itself was quite basic - we didn't really learn much grammar,
or improve or practise grammar, but we did learn a lot of
new vocabulay and we did a lot of oral work.
The week was briilliant really for improving
our confidence and our ability to speak and get
around ways of saying certain things. The times of the courses
were very good as well because it was 9am-1pm, which meant
we had the whole rest of the day to do pretty much what we
wanted. The organised activities were quite good as well,
the tour was really interesting and the cinema was beneficial
also. I thought it was really good that none of the teachers
at the school would speak English or let us use dictionaries,
because they were all really easy to understand with clear
accents. If we weren't sure of a word they would describe
it to us in French which gave us loads of synonyms which are
useful for our exams.
Basically the week was AMAZING and we really
wanted to stay an extra week (or month). I would
definitely recommend it for the culture and the experience,
and for improving oral skills and learning vocab. If someone
was wanting to improve or learn grammar it isn't really that
focused on this, although they might have looked at that in
more depth in the second week.
Anyway, thank you so much for helping us organise it - we
had a brilliant time!"
* Good luck to Jenny & Ashleigh
in their exams this summer! *
