Situated on the banks of the river Danube, this beautiful city
has been the metropolis of central Europe for many centuries. Anyone
who has ever strolled through the narrow streets and then entered
one of the spacious baroque squares would be forgiven for thinking
they are dreaming - dreaming of emperors and empresses, or of Mozart,
Schubert and Beethoven, all former residents of Vienna. The legacy
of the Habsburg dynasty and Vienna's musical supremacy is still
very much alive - today's buildings are lavish and opulent, and
music remains a strong driving force in Viennese life. The German
spoken in Austria is also considered pure: many experts believe
it is the finest, most melodious German.
