'La Ciudad Blanca' is located at nearly 3,000m in the Andean
highlands and is the beautiful, judicial capital of Bolivia. Founded
in 1538 as the city of La Plata, all buildings in the centre were
traditionally painted white, hence the city's reputation as the
White City of the Americas. Support from UNESCO and relative isolation
has only served to maintain its colonial elegance and small population
of just 150,000. With two universities, Sucre has also developed
into one of the country's main learning centres and just walking
through its cobbled streets you'll realise it has a youthful, energetic
feel about it. You certainly won't be bored here - the lively central
plaza is a swarm of students, locals and indigenous people, with
numerous museums, mansions and colonial churches to explore all
around.
