| Colombia’s tumultuous history of civil war, drugs and kidnappings has meant that, for many visitors to South America, it has typically been low down on any South American travel itinerary. Yet if ever there was a good time to visit this exotic country in the north-western corner of South America it is now. The security situation has improved considerably and, although precautions still need to be taken, the country’s sheer diversity in terms of climate, landscape, people and culture should not be missed. Suddenly we have at relatively safe access a world of beautiful Caribbean beaches, snow-capped Andean peaks, lush Amazonian jungle, magnificent colonial cities, extensive coffee plantations, exhilarating outdoor activities and, perhaps most importantly, truly warm and friendly colombianos. Add to this the fact that the Spanish spoken in Colombia is particularly clear and untouched – thanks in part to the country’s geographical isolation - and it makes for a unique and inspiring place to learn Spanish.
