Think of long sandy beaches and a glitzy French seaside resort,
and you'll most likely picture the Côte d'Azur. But nestled
in the southwest corner of France, just a stone's throw from Spain,
is the glamorous town of Biarritz, not as famous as its Riviera
neighbours but no less stylish and, unfortunately, not that much
cheaper. A quaint fishing village until the mid 19th century, all
changed for Biarritz when Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie came
to visit and fell in love with the area's natural beauty. A few
more royals and some tasteful development later, Biarritz is now
a fashionable resort with elegant architecture and some great spots
to go out. But let's not forget the real reason people come here
- whether it's for the sun or the surf, there are miles of golden
sand and Atlantic waves just waiting to be soaked up.
