Sitting on the Rhine and playing headquarter to a host of heavy industry and mining corporations, Dusseldorf has earned something of an unfair reputation when it comes to the beauty stakes. The capital of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia also suffered heavy bombing during WWII but, after careful reconstruction, what we see now is very much a sophisticated, successful and culturally diverse metropolis. Under its modern, efficient exterior flourishes a lively cultural scene, an appreciation of art, a flair for fashion and, in typical German spirit, a taste for beer. For an extra dose of all the above head for the Aldstadt, or old town, where fine Renaissance buildings and typical German fare also await. And if you want a breather from this fast-paced city it's worth bearing in mind that 75% of the state is composed of fields, forests and lakes, giving you ample opportunity to recharge those batteries and, in the summer, enjoy the warm weather.
