Antigua, Guatemala

In many ways Guatemala is Central America all rolled into one.

More about Guatemala>>

:: Welcome to Antigua
Picture this: a small but beautiful and brightly coloured bird,
full of life. More than the national bird and monetary unit of Guatemala,
the quetzal is a true reflection of what lies within. In a country
of breathtaking scenery and vibrant people, it's easy to see why
Antigua is the gem that sparkles most. Just wander down any street
and you'll be treated to a display of fine colonial architecture
and fairytale pastel-coloured rows of houses, with bunting and streamers
bouncing in the breeze in honour of some festival. And all this
in view of 3 volcanoes which the more adventurous can climb - and
the rest of us can admire from a quiet café terrace, a delicious
jugo de piña in hand.

Plus points

Beautiful colonial town
Stunning mountain setting
Low cost of living
Most places within walking distance
Excellent base for adventure activities

The main part of Antigua is found within a few blocks of its lively
central square, or Parque Central. Lined with cafés, bars,
and banks, the square has an attractive park area and fountain around
which local women lay their handicrafts and villagers sell bags
of freshly-cut mango. Antigua is also the ideal base from which
to discover other parts of Guatemala: no trip would be complete
without bargaining at the colourful market at Chichicastenango,
spending a night on the mystical shores of Lake Atitlán,
or exploring the spectacular Mayan jungle ruins at Tikal.
