Built by Peter the Great in 1703 to emulate European capitals,
St Petersburg is one of Russia's most beautiful cities. It is also
one of its most historical. The storming of the Winter Palace in
1917 marked the start of the Revolution and the very changes to
its name over the course of the last century reflect key periods
in Russian history. Today it is a unique and atmospheric blend of
styles, but it will always be the city of the Tsars, the sense of
glory, decadence and intrigue never quite forgotten as you dream
of its departed aristocrats, writers and villains…
Plus Points:
Former capital of the Russian empire
Grand 18th century buildings
Picturesque streets & canals
Classical music, opera & ballet
'White nights' celebrations
Soon foreign architects were invited to help in its construction
and, hand in hand with Russian workmanship and traditions, they
created a unique, atmospheric blend of styles.
The banks of the splendid Neva are home to dozens of architectural
icons such as the Hermitage (the former Winter Palace of the Tsars),
the Peter and Paul Fortress and the Smolny Cathedral. Nowhere else
will you feel such a sense of majesty and splendour as in St Petersburg.
It is truly the city of the Tsars: the sense of glory, decadence
and intrigue never leaves you as you dream of its departed aristocrats,
artists, writers and infamous villains.
