In the world of Spanish language learning, Salamanca is the
place to be seen, and seen practising. Doing for Spain what Oxford
does for England, and Bologna for Italy, Salamanca is home to one
of the country's oldest and most prestigious universities - to say
nothing of the extra-curricular activities that go with it. Just
two hours west of Madrid, word also has it that the Spanish spoken
here is one of the clearest in Spain. With a warm beige sandstone
echoed in buildings throughout the city, and probably the most active
Plaza Mayor in all of Spain, it's no wonder students flock here
as much to study as to soak up the atmosphere and have fun.
Plus points:
Beautiful, traditional university town
Large school close to centre
Clear spoken Spanish
Courses available every week
Excellent value programmes
With Gothic cathedrals and Romanesque churches, and a central square
widely considered one of Spain's grandest, Salamanca is a feast
of architectural grandeur. Almost everything is within walking distance
of the Plaza Mayor, founded in 1755 and today the ideal place to
nurse a cup of coffee and watch the world go by.
Lying beside the River Tormes in the province of Castilla y León,
Salamanca is just two hours west of Madrid, the gateway to the rest
of Spain. It is also close to the border with Portugal and surrounded
by many attractive, walled settlements dating back to Roman times.
