San Sebastian, Spain

For all the millions who visit Spain each year there are a million reasons why. Whatever your whim, you can be sure that somewhere in Spain will cater to it.

More about Spain>>

:: Welcome to San Sebastian
Much lesser known that its coastal Spanish counterparts, San Sebastian is perhaps better left this way. Those of you who do choose to go here to learn Spanish will not need to be told why. The incredible golden beach is worlds away from the crowded, touristy ones of the southern Costas, while the town itself is a delightful mix of Basque and Spanish tradition, surrounded by the lush green hills of Gipúzcoa. Don't let any political unrest tarnish your view - San Sebastián is surprisingly safe and in fact one of the top spots to go for a good time, with restaurants dishing up plate after plate of outstanding seafood and nouvelle cuisine, and thriving tapas bars filling the Parte Vieja and all those who visit to the absolute brim. Plus points: Beautiful golden beach Mild winters & warm summers Most places within walking distance Wide range of activities in town & surrounding area Gastronomic heaven! In fact it is one of the most authentic Basque places you can visit, offering a glimpse of Spain's second language and culture, rivalled only by the Castillian culture of the south and east coasts. Your tastebuds are in for a treat as you discover fine seafood restaurants by the harbour, and others serving local specialities such as the enormous beef chops known as chuletas de buey. Later on San Sebastián's old town, the Parte Vieja, becomes a hive of activity as people flood to the many lively bars in the area to party the night away. Boasting some of the best city beaches in all of Spain, visitors and locals alike are known to enjoy long lazy afternoons on the beach, watching the surfers who come from afar to take advantage of the Atlantic swell. The more adventurous partake in the many water sports available, be this sailing, rowing or diving. San Sebastián is also famous for its International Jazz Festival, celebrated in July, and the Festival de Cine, the annual film festival held towards the end of September. And of course no visit to the region would be complete without taking in the stunning Pyrenees, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao or the world-famous bull fest in nearby Pamplona.
