the majority of these in Greece and the rest spread over some
35 countries such as Albania, Cyprus, Egypt, and as far afield
as Australia and Congo. On a cultural level the importance of
Greek cannot be underestimated. As the language of Greek philosophy
and literature, and of the early Church, it has profoundly shaped
western thought.
